White Reflective HDPE liner for a Beach Resort in Riau Archipelago
Located at Batam Island, Riau, Indonesia, this project involves the construction of a water sport and recreational pond within a resort. Various waterproofing materials were considered, and after careful evaluation, GSE® HD White geomembrane was selected as the primary barrier. This choice was made due to its exceptional mechanical performance, thermal aging and weathering resistance, aligning with the owner's environmental and aesthetic concerns.
The architectural design incorporates a flexible and durable white reflective geomembrane, offering a cost-effective solution for mitigating soil erosion on the embankment slope. This material also significantly reduces seepage and leakage compared to traditional earthen and concrete lining systems. These improvements are expected to enhance the resort's overall landscape view, potentially increasing its occupancy rate.
The objectives of introducing GSE HD White geomembrane include:
1) controlling and preventing water seepage and leakage;
2) accommodating potential ground settlement;
3) providing a cost-effective solution for leakage and erosion problems, and
4) leveraging its proven track record of over four decades in similar applications.
The installation of the geomembrane was completed between July and October 2022, with Solmax supplying 12,000 square meters of 1.50 mm thick GSE HD White geomembrane. This liner is ideal for applications requiring excellent aesthetic appearance, high UV resistance, and overall endurance at an affordable cost.
The project's uniqueness and complexity stem from several factors. Firstly, the challenging weather conditions at the project site on a small island with poor transport connectivity pose logistical hurdles. Access is limited to small boats, complicating the transport of construction materials. Despite these challenges, the construction team successfully completed the project in time for the resort's grand opening.
Additionally, the project highlights the use of polyethylene, particularly GSE HD White geomembrane, as a valuable engineering solution for environmental protection. These geomembranes offer low permeability, exceptional flexibility, excellent long-term weathering performance, and chemical resistance. Their mechanical strength makes them ideal for liquid containment systems. Compared to conventional reinforced concrete structures, geosynthetic liners provide a cost-effective solution with reduced maintenance needs.
Solmax delivered an environmentally and economically sustainable solution through GSE HD White geomembrane. The project's outcomes are highly beneficial for the client and the surrounding communities. It boosts tourism, supports the local economy by creating employment opportunities, and improves the living standards of the local community.
